Course Number Brief Course Description

CS 1

Dangerous Ideas and Forbidden Knowledge

This 12-credit course will explore ideas that throughout history society wasn’t ready for—ideas that have challenged conventional thinking and been met with hostility and suppression.  By reading plays, as well as books and studies in the fields of Women Studies and Science, in addition to hands-on experiments in the lab, we will investigate why these ideas were considered dangerous and created such furor.

CS 4

ATOMS TO ECOSYSTEMS

Atoms to Ecosystems (A2E) is our exciting new interdisciplinary science program.  In this year-long series, we  introduce Chemistry and Biology to science majors in an innovative learning environment that emphasizes collaborative, active, interdisciplinary, project-based activities. We expect A2E to run again for the 2010/2011 academic year!

BIO 100

BIOLOGICAL PRINCIPLES

An introductory biology course with lab for the non-science major.  Topics covered in this case study-based course include cell biology, DNA and genetics, evolution, and ecology.

BIO 160

GENERAL BIOLOGY

Basic biological concepts with emphasis on general cell processes, plant and animal diversity, morphology, limited reproduction, phylogeny of the living organisms, exploration of molecular genetics.  (Note that this class was previously known as Bio 101.)

BIO 211

COLLEGE BIOLOGY, I

Emphasis on cellular biology including cell structure, organization, metabolism, energetics, and the gene, including molecular, chromosomal, Mendelian, and microbial genetics.  (Note that this class was previously known as Bio 201.)

BIO 212

COLLEGE BIOLOGY, II

Integrated study of basic concepts concerning animal biology. Emphasizes animal classification, evolution, histology, embryology, and examination of animal systems.  (Note that this class was previously known as Bio 202.)

BIO 213

COLLEGE BIOLOGY, III

Integrated study of basic concepts concerning evolution, ecology, and the biological principles of prokaryotes, fungi, protista, and plants;  including their physiology, anatomy, growth, and diversity. (Note that this class was previously known as Bio 203.)

SCI 119

NATURAL HISTORY OF THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST

Short (4-5 day) field trips investigating the biology, geology, and natural history of the various Pacific Northwest gems.  Come join us for science in the sun!
