This week's discussion assignment will have two parts, the second of which you will be analyzing some movies. This is an individual assignment.

#1. I would like for you to describe, for your classmates, Piaget's notion of Assimilation and Accommodation. Use your own words and remember that simple is better. You may find it helpful to read THIS and watch THIS and THIS.

This article, on page 14 has some info on Vygotsky if you are interested, but it is not required.

Second, I would like you to watch the following movies. Warning, some of the kids are adorable and you will forget all of these instructions while watching them. On average, the movies are about 1-2 minutes long, with the exception of the interview on gestures. It's less than 5 minutes.

Language Overextention (what would piaget call this?)

Interesting interview regarding gestures.

Theory of Mind: Intro, One, Two, Three, and Four

Conservation experiments

Numbers

So, here are the remaining discussion questions:

#2. While watching the last movie on the conservation of numbers, I'd like for you to pay particular attention to the young boy shown first. Using your own words, identify and describe a behavior that Vygotsky would argue supports his view of child development.

#3. Lastly, what is the young boy doing that seems to be the source of his trouble about the question of number? Use Piagets ideas, but say it in your own words.
