Update, 2/14/09:

Some movies to watch as a way to 'see' what Piaget is talking about. Use the same login pass (psych206 develop). This isn't an assignment as much as it is a visual aid.

General Theory (Equilibrium maintained through Assimilation and Accommodation)

Sensorimotor stage is about defining the world through action and sensation. Consistent object permanence is attained by the end of this stage

Preoperational stage is about assimilating the world using ideas and symbols, but not in a logical, or rule bound way. Most of my movies don't show what these children are doing, so you have to look at the next stage to see what is attained. But one set of movies I do have, that isn't apart of Piaget's theory yet occurs during this stage is the attainment of "Theory of Mind."

Concrete operations: Learning is fun but has rules. Kids spend as much time learning the rules for playing games than actually playing, for example. They still assimilate (we always can assimilate) but now they understand that there can be rules for using ideas. These logical abilities are concrete. That is, they have to be tangible, in front of them, or simple.

Formal Operations. Here we have logic that can be applied to abstract ideas. Prediction is possible. Interpreting outcomes of prediction in a systematic way is possible. Thinking about Thinking about Thinking is possible. Although the Great Apes have language, you don't see them writing about verbs. Or writing a poem about writing about verbs. In these movies, notice how the kids explain how they answer the problem. Notice who is systematic and who isn't.

The difficulty is that students are not signing up as I had planned in a timely fashion. Nonetheless, it will be done, even if we have to postpone the due date some.
