General Biology with Lab

Science is fascinating. We use science everyday in solving problems and making observations. There will be times in our lives when having knowledge of biological science will be very important. These times include making decisions about healthcare for yourself or someone you love, understanding the consequences of our ecological footprint to future generations, and voting on issues that affect global warming, endangered species, stem cell research, and the budget set for the premiere research funding institution in the United States, the National Institutes of Health (NIH). A general understanding of biology and how and where to get more reliable information if you need it, will help you navigate through these challenging waters.

With this in mind, as your instructor, I will endeavor to introduce you to
1) the process of science,
2) a survey of biology from DNA to evolution to global warming,
3) a guide and practical experience on how to find reliable resources,
4) hands-on experience of what scientists have done in the past and are doing
today in the field of biology,
5) how biological science relates to our everyday lives, and
6) how much fun science really is!

In this class I will design learning experiences that facilitate student's achievement of course outcomes, I will clearly communicate expectations, and I will be responsive to individual student's learning styles and needs. It is my expectation that the student will assume responsibility for their learning by completing reading and assignments on time, actively participating in class sessions, and finding help either from myself or another resource should they find that they are struggling or inspired!
