Looking at Websites

Be careful when you search the Web! The first site you get may not be your best. Remember to look carefully at your results. When you look at a Web page, ask yourself:

  • Who made it?
  • Why was it made?
  • Is it up to date?

Asking these questions will help you decide whether it's your best online resource or not. For example: Mealtime.org:

  • Find the "about us" link.
  • What organization is behind this website?
  • What do you think their reason is for posting this information?

Who is talking? Another example: nutrition chat on Everydayhealth.com.

Good websites for your research:

Finding Articles

Use eLibrary to find online newspaper and magazine articles on your topic. You can find eLibrary in the list of Periodical Databases and also here. (Log in off campus with your SID# and last name.)

Finding Books

Reference Books - use these books to look up good information on a specific topic. These books cannot be checked out.

  • Gale Encyclopedia of Medicine [REF RC 41.G35 1999]
  • Encyclopedia of Family Health [REF RC 81.A2 E5 2004]

Circulating Books - check these books out using your Student ID cards.

Try a simple keyword search.

Then check location (which library?) and call number (where in the library?).
