Reference Materials
Finding authoritative background information and coming up with good search terms are both crucial steps in conducting effective research. Reference materials in the library can help you with both. North Seattle Community College Library has numerous dictionaries and encyclopedias on a wide variety of historical subjects. Reference books are arranged by call number on the first floor of the library. Some examples are:
- Encyclopedia of Modern Asia, 6 Vols.[Ref DS 4.E53 2002]
- Encyclopedia of Asian History, 4 Vols. [Ref DS 31.E53 1988]
- Historical Dictionary of Vietnam [Ref DS 556.25.5 1989]
- Encyclopedia of the Vietnam War, 3 Vols. [Ref DS557.7.E53 1998]
- Chinese History, A Manual [Ref DS 735.W695 2000]
- Modern Japan: An Encyclopedia of History, Culture, and Nationalism [Ref DS 805.M63 1998]
- Encyclopedia of the Korean War, 3 Vols. [Ref DS 918.E53 2000]
- Historical Dictionary of Indonesia [Ref DS 633.C75 2004]
- Encyclopedia of China [Ref DS705.P47 1999]
- Cambridge Illustrated History of China [Ref DS706.E37 1999]
You can also simply browse the shelves in the reference section. At NSCC (and at many colleges and universities) the books are arranged according to the Library of Congress (LC) classification scheme. If you are looking for books on Asian history, you will find the call numbers begin with DS and are subdivided by country. (The more general the content the lower the call number.)
To get a general idea of how books are organized in LC, take a look at the Library of Congress Classification Outline. Here is the DS subclass (or section) for Asia. You can also use these call number ranges to browse for books upstairs, in the circulating collection.
To learn more about reference material in the NSCC library, stop by the reference desk and talk to a librarian!
