Beynac

"Chateau Beynac overlooking the Dordorgne River, France",
© Elroy Christenson1993
The Chateau Beynac is situated on an high cliff for a strategic
overlook on the Dordorgne River. This area was very much involved in
the Hundred Years War in the struggle between the Plantagenets and
Capetians. From the Chateau built about 1115 the French could keep
watch on the English chateaux on the opposite side of the river.
Other villages of the area became famous in the own right.
Rocamadour for the religious pilgrimage site and Eze for the many cave
paintings of from over 20,000 bce. In the village at the base of the
cliff more recently Paul Eluard, the Dadaist poet, had lived for
awhile.
