Roussillon is a painted town of many colors of ochre. It has had its clays mined here since probably before the Roman time. The clays range in color from a yellow ochre, used in most oil paint, and a reddish raw sienna. The locals make the most use of their resource by painting their houses in alternated ochers usually with accenting blue shutters.

The area around Luberon attained some notoriety with book "A Year in Provence" by Peter Mayles. Roussillon is only a short ride from where his farm was located. The valley is dotted with picturesque villages surrounded by vineyards.
