The Radcliffe Camera is the main reading room of the Bodleian Library with over 600,000 books held in an underground stacks within the  Radcliffe Square.   The building was designed by James Gibbs and built 1737-49 with £40,000 donation of Dr. John Radcliffe.  Gibbs also designed the church of St. Martin-in-the-Fields across from the National Gallery in Trafalgar Square.  Although the Radcliffe Camera was originally designed to house the entire general library book collection it quickly out grew that use.  It is only open to those with a special reader's card.
