Khajaraho

"Relief of a temple in Khajaraho, India", © Elroy
Christenson 1968.
Khajaraho is a romote and difficult-to-get-to village in north-central
India, at least before the airport was built. There are about 12
temples here remaining here out of as many as 45 temples dedicated to
the tantric Hindu worship based on sexual gratification. Many of the
carvings are very explicit versions that depict positions from the
Kamasutra of Vatsyayana. Most temples were constructed around the 9th
to 11th century.
Of the three - Dharma, Artha and Kama, Kama "must be learned by
all because pleasures are as necessary as food for one's existence and
well-being, and are consequenlty required equally. Pleasures are in
fact the first fruits fo good Dharma and Artha, but they must be
pursued with moderation and caution born from knowledge. "
