"The Dry garden of Ryonaji Temple", built in the 1480's ©2001 photo Elroy Christenson
This is one of several different gardens on the grounds of Ryoanji
Temple which ironically also includes a large pond with walking paths
and an especially nice moss garden. Originally built in 1480's the dry
garden here with its specially chosen and arranged stones has been the
recognized definition of Zen Buddhism for over 500 hundred years. The
platform on the right is designed as a space for seated meditation.
