Jacob Lawrence was one of the foremost black artists of America.  He taught at the University of Washington for many years from which he eventually retired.  He showed locally at Francine Seders Gallery here in Seattle as well as having had many exhibitions nationally and internationally.  He did covers for Time magazine and a poster for the Olympics.  His wife,  Gwen Knight who recently died, was also a recognized artist.
