Semester at Sea Voyage F' 2001

SAS Travel is always an adventure

In the Fall of 2001 Cheryl, Kristen (our 18 year old daughter) and I took an unbelievable voyage around the world. On board the S. S. Universe Explorer were about 650 students (mostly under 25 years old) 30 faculty, a couple of hundred staff, crew and adult passangers. As planned for more than three years we were going through Asia and the Suez Canal but because of Sept. 11th we were detoured around Africa. Actually we didn't know what was going to happen since we were about two days out of Japan when the event took place. Each port of call was entered with many cautions and admonitions to downplay our look as typical Americans. A couple of scheduled countries were bypassed because of reactions of locals to the war activities. Generally it became quite an adventure never knowing what port we would be in next or how the locals would react to our stay in their country. As rule, we were well received by all the people with whom we had contact. The people were generally sympathic to our fight against terrorism. The students and the faculty handled the inevitable changes with understanding and humor. We returned from our voyage with 50 rolls of slide film, about 75 rolls of print film and loads of souvenirs. What you see here is only the most meager sample of these photos. One page will lead through the next page of the voyage by following the "SAS Voyage" link. To see other trips you will have to go back to the "travel index".
Here are few pages which I've linked to my SAS photos and travel sketches in the order of the trip.
