Chemistry 161 is the first class in a three-quarter sequence introducing the basic concepts in chemistry. Lab included. Covers structure and bonding, chemical reactivity: physical measurement, stoichiometry, structure of matter, gas laws, intermolecular forces, solutions, chemical kinetics, equilibrium, acid/base, thermodynamics, redox, electrochemistry and selected topics. Prereq: CHEM& 139 or departmental placement test, and MATH 098 with a 2.0 or better. English proficiency at the ENGL& 101 level highly recommended. Transfer class.
