Japanese Education in Crisis
[DVD 447]       2003       Films for the Humanities & Sciences
4 3/4" DVD     Color       1 videodisc, 20 min.

Gritty footage shot in chaotic classrooms and dysfunctional homes, combined with commentary from counselors, parents, and dispirited young people, depicts a nation unprepared for radical social change and, in spite of recent educational reforms, lacking a consensus on whether to crack down or loosen up. Portions are in Japanese with English subtitles.

Jazz begins in New Orleans, nineteenth century America's most cosmopolitan city, where the sound of marching bands, Italian opera, Caribbean rhythms, and minstrel shows fills the streets with a richly diverse musical culture. Here, in the 1890s, African-American musicians create a new music out of these ingredients by mixing in ragtime syncopations and the soulful feeling of the blues. Soon after the start of the new century, people are calling it jazz. A film by Ken Burns. Closed captioned.

Jazz offers an escape from the ghetto for two brilliant sons of Jewish immigrants, Benny Goodman and Artie Shaw. In New York, we follow Duke Ellington uptown to Harlem's most celebrated nightspot, the gangster-owned, whites-only Cotton Club. Called the most perfect three minutes of music ever created, Louis Armstrong's astonishing performance lifts jazz to the level of high art. A film by Ken Burns. Closed captioned.

In 1929 the Stock Market collapses and the Great Depression begins. On Broadway, Louis Armstrong revolutionizes the art of American popular song and displays a flair for showmanship that makes him one of the nation's top entertainers. Duke Ellington takes jazz beyond category, composing hit tunes with a new sophistication. In 1935, Palomar Ballroom in Los Angeles, the dancers go wild when they hear Benny Goodman's big-band beat. As the Great Depression drags on, jazz comes as close as it has ever come to being America's popular music, providing entertainment and escape for a people down on their luck. It has a new name now - Swing - and for millions of young fans, it will be the defining music of their generation. Benny Goodman is hailed as the King of Swing, while teenagers jitterbug just as hard to the music of his rivals - Tommy Dorsey, Jimmie Lunceford, Glenn Miller, and Artie Shaw. 4 3/4" DVD     Color     1 videodisc, 105 min.
As the 1930's come to a close, Swing-mania is still going strong, but some fans are saying success has made the music too predictable. Their ears are tuned to a new sound - pulsing, stomping, suffused with the blues. It's the Kansas City sound of Count Basie's band and it quickly reignites the spirit of Swing. Billie Holiday tours with Basie's band until she leaves to join Artie Shaw. But America isn't ready for a black woman who swings with white musicians and Holiday is soon back in New York, pouring her outrage into the anti-lynching ballad, Strange Fruit. A film by Ken Burns. Jazz, #07: Dedicated to Chaos 1940 - 1945
[DVD 40]        2000     PBS
4 3/4" DVD     Color     1 videodisc, 120 min.
When America enters World War II, jazz is part of the arsenal. In Europe, where musicians like the Gypsy guitarist Django Reinhardt continue to play despite a Nazi ban. Bandleaders like Glenn Miller and Artie Shaw enlist, taking their swing to the troops overseas. For many black Americans, segregated at home and in uniform, they find themselves fighting for liberties their own country denies them. Despite such injustices, jazz answers the call during the war years. Duke Ellington sells war bond, and premieres his most ambitious work ever as a benefit for war relief. Underground and after-hours, jazz is changing. In a Harlem club, a small band of young musicians, led by the trumpet virtuoso Dizzy Gillespie and the brilliant saxophonist Charlie Parker create the sound called bebop. A film by Ken Burns. Jazz, #08: Risk 1945 - 1955
[DVD 41]       2000     PBS
4 3/4" DVD    Color     1 videodisc, 120 min.
The postwar years brings prosperity but the Cold War threat of nuclear annihilation makes these anxious years as well. Charlie Parker's new ideas and technique are as overwhelming for musicians of his generation as Louis Armstrong's had been a quarter-century before. Dizzy Gillespie tries to popularize the new sound by adding showmanship and Latin rhythms, while pianist Thelonius Monk infuses it with his eccentric personality to create a music all his own. Except for jazz initiates, however, few people are listening. Teens now swoon for pop singers and dance to rhythm and blues. California musicians create a mellow sound called cool jazz, and Dave Brubeck mixes jazz with classical music. A film by Ken Burns. Closed captioned.

Miles Davis combines jazz with rock 'n' roll by using electric instruments to launch a wildly popular sound called Fusion. Just Black? Multi-Racial Identity
[VHS 856]     1992    Filmakers Library
1/2" video     Color    1 cass., 57 min.
We meet several articulate young men and women of mixed racial heritage. Each has one black parent, and a white, Asian or Hispanic second parent. They share with us their struggle to establish, acquire and assert a racial identity. Their experiences lead one to question whether there is room in  America for a multi-racial identity. The interviews raise the questions on dating, family relationships, friendships and childhood experiences. As these young people speak of their hopes and frustrations, they all reveal the tension of having their multicultural background overlooked and being classified as having one racial identity.
