All-American athlete, scholar, renowned baritone, stage actor, and social activist, Paul Robeson (1898-1976) was a towering figure and a trailblazer many times over. He was perhaps most groundbreaking, however, in the medium of film. The son of an escaped slave, Robeson managed to become a top-billed movie star during the time of Jim Crow America striving to project positive images of black characters. Increasingly politically minded, Robeson eventually left movies behind, using his international celebrity to speak for those denied their civil liberties around the world and ultimately becoming a victim of ideological persecution himself.

Planet Earth, #5
[DVD 380]        2007          BBC
4 3/4" DVD      Color          1 videodisc, 58 min. each episode
Saving Species  Is there really is an extinction crisis facing certain species? The making of the series was a bittersweet experience since some creatures were filmed with the knowledge that their continued existence is under threat. Species have always become extinct, but now, the viewer is told, the rate of extinction is accelerating and it will "really reach biblical proportions within a few decades." It is estimated that if a monetary value could be put on all that the world's ecosystems do for humanity, it would total some $30 trillion.
Into the Wilderness  What is man's potential effect on the world's areas of wilderness? As the human population has grown, only a quarter of Earth's land now remains uninhabited (aside from Antarctica). Although around 12% is protected, this may be enough — providing such places are not just 'enclosures' and bordering territories are also managed. This leads to the question of overpopulation. Some argue that it is not just about numbers: how humans consume their resources is also important. However, others believe that the world would be greatly more sustainable if the population level was reduced to about half its current level. Consumption of fresh water is highlighted: there are now 40,000 more dams in existence than in 1950. The controversy over drilling for oil in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is discussed by both its advocates and opponents. An answer to deforestation is found in Costa Rica, where farmers are paid to allow their pasture to revert to forest for its water services. The program also deals with climate change, which is now happening at a faster rate than ever before.
Living Together  What is the future of conservation? It begins by looking at previous efforts. The 'Save the Whale' campaign, which started in the 1960s, is seen to have had a limited effect, as whaling continues and fish stocks also decline. In the 1990s, as the Kenya Wildlife Service took on the poachers by employing armed units. Although it was successful in saving elephants, the policy was detrimental to the Maasai people, who were forced from their land. Also discussed is the need for "fortress" areas, sustainable development, trophy hunting, and ecotourism. Contributors to the program admit a degree of worry about the future, but also optimism.

This video carefully reviews the traditional ways of studying play: the Freudian-Eriksonian emphasis on its emotional content, the Piagetian view of its importance in symbolic representation and the social psychological approach of looking at how play contributes to socialization. Lev Vygotsky’s unique contribution of seeing play as an arena in which a child can begin to master her own behavior is carefully detailed. The video ends with practical suggestions for fostering high level play in early childhood settings.

That's when he meets artist Lee Krasner, who puts her career on hold to be his companion, lover, champion, wife, and, in essence, caretaker. To get him away from booze, insecurity, and the stress of city life, they move to the Hamptons where nature and sobriety help Pollock achieve a breakthrough in style: a critic praises, then Life magazine calls. But so do old demons: the end is nasty, brutish, and short. Ed Harris, Marcia Gay Harden, Amy Madigan.

The Power Of Myth By Joseph Campbell
[DVD 76]       2001       PBS/Mystic Fire Video
4 3/4" DVD    Color       2 videodiscs, 60 min. each episode
Bill Moyers and Joseph Campbell discuss the themes and roots of human myth which is seen as man's attempt to relate himself to the universe. Starting with various topics Campbell shows both how man creates his universe and is controlled by the myth he has created. Originally produced for television broadcast in 1988.
Disc 1. The Hero's Adventure -- Long before medieval knights charged off to slay dragons, tales of heroic adventures were an integral part of all world cultures. Campbell challenges everyone to see the presence of a heroic journey in his or her own life.
Disc 1.The Message of the Myth -- Campbell compares the Genesis creation story with others from around the world. Because the world changes, religion has to be transformed and new mythologies created. People today are stuck with old metaphors and myths that do not fit their needs.
Disc 1. The First Storytellers -- Campbell discusses the importance of accepting death as rebirth as in the myth of the buffalo and the story of Christ, the rite of passage in primitive societies, the role of mystical shamans, and the decline of ritual in today's society.
Disc 2. Sacrifice and Bliss -- Campbell discusses the role of sacrifice in myth, which symbolizes the necessity for rebirth. Talks about the significance of sacrifice, in particular, a mother's sacrifice for her child, and the sacrifice to the relationship in marriage.
Disc 2. Love and the Goddess --Campbell talks about romantic love, beginning with the 12th century troubadours, and addresses questions about the image of woman as Goddess, virgin, and mother earth.
Disc 2. Masks of Eternity -- Campbell provides challenging insights into the concepts of God, religion and eternity, as revealed in Christian teachings and the beliefs of Buddhists, Navajo Indians, Schopenhauer, Jung and others.
