Assignments

These assignments again follow the same basic scheme as those for all other weeks.

Reading assignment:  This week we begin our study of the carnivorous dinosaurs, the theropods (chapter 9).  This group has some famous members such as Allosaurus, Tyrannosaurus, Velociraptor, and Compsognathus (the little "Compys" in Jurassic Park movies).  These are popular dinosaurs for Hollywood to depict but we will work to separate observational fact from movie fiction!

Weekly communication:  As usual, we will utilize the communication room specific to this week.  As you know, up to 15 points can be earned through your active participation this week.

Class blog: Another thought has been posted to our public class blog for your consideration.  As in previous weeks, please post your comments some time this week at http://nsccdinosaurs.blogspot.comUp to 10 points can be earned through your contributions during this week.

Quiz (due end of Sunday at midnight):  As we do every week, you need to take a timed (30-minute) quiz on our reading material for this week.  Total points possible for the quiz are 15 with a bonus point for timely submittal.

Live online meeting (Monday at 7 PM MOVED to Saturday at 10 AM): Each week you have the option to join a live online session on Monday evenings.  You must notify me by email or in the communication room if you are interested in meeting so that I can plan to be present. If we meet, the meeting will be automatically recorded so that folks who were not able to attend can always listen in to the conversations.  The recordings will be available on the live online meeting web pageNo points are related to participation.

Written assignment (due end of Tuesday at midnight): As usual, your submission form for this assignment will be in your In box / Out box.  Remember to compose your answers OFF-LINE.

Totals points possible are 50 for completing this part.  And, if you turn in the answers on-time, an additional 5 bonus points are added to your final score.

In-person or "virtual" field trip:  We have an in-person or virtual field trip this week.  For those who are interested and available, I will lead a visit to the Burke Museum (University of Washington Campus) on Sunday, February 21st, at 10 AM.  This is an small but incredible museum packed with fossils and rocks from the Pacific Northwest and around the world.

EVERYONE is welcome -- feel free to bring family and friends.  Admission to the museum has been $4 per person (a discount from the regular entrance fee).  The museum has a parking lot but allow 20 minutes to find a space and make it to the entrance by 10 AM sharp.  If you are late, it may affect the credit you can earn for this optional course activity.

Learn more about the museum and its location by visiting their website at: http://www.washington.edu/burkemuseum/Find the web pages on the "Life and Times of Washington State" in order to preview the area of the museum where we will be spending most of our time.  The "Field Guides" link and "Research & Collections" link on the museum website bring you to some great online resources for learning about our regional natural history.  This website is fun, informative, nicely designed and highly recommended!

For this trip, bring paper and pen.  We will each complete a field trip report during our 2-hour visit to the museum.  Report forms will be handed out to participants and, if completed properly, are worth 10 points.  This report will be turned in at the end of the trip.

CLICK HERE FOR THE FIRST BURKE MUSEUM FIELD TRIP REPORT FORM.  Feel free to print this out ahead of time.  However, I will distribute copies when we meet in-person as well. (One of the questions refers to chapter 8 in an earlier textbook so please ignore that.)

Because of a special exhibit ("Cruising the Fossil Freeway"), we are in luck!  A second Field Trip form will be used to explore this bonus feature.

"Virtual field trip" option: If you cannot attend the in-person field trip described above, an alternative field trip and report can be completed for the same 10 points.  The field trip can be online (many virtual geologic field trips are available) or it can be your own in-person field trip to a geologically significant location.  Or, if you visit the Burke Museum on your own, you can complete the Burke Museum field trip report form available above and email it to me.  If you wish to work on one of these other trip options, you need to email me ahead of time to receive approval for your field trip idea. Together we will work out the type of report you will need to complete.

Your virtual field trip report is due at the same time as the written homework this week.  Total time involved for whatever trip you take should be about 1-2 hours.  In other words, your work should entail approximately as much time as the first option for the in-person Burke Museum trip and report in order to earn a comparable amount of points.

TOTAL REGULAR POINTS possible this week are 100.   TOTAL BONUS POINTS possible are 6 for on-time quiz and written homework (plus points for discovered textbook errors and updates).   Email me privately or post publicly in the communication room if you have any questions.
