Discussion

Points: 10

Due: Answers posted by the end of Friday, January 8, responses to others posted by the end of Monday, January 11

horizontal rule

Important Information: Students will need to use the Angel management software to participate in the discussions. To access the Angel website, students will need their student identification numbers. Initially, the student's login user name will be his or her student ID number, and the password will also be the student ID number. Any student wishing to change his or her password should record the information in an easily accessible place in the event the password is forgotten.

The Angel website is available by clicking here

Discussion grading: For each discussion, six points are awarded for answering all discussion questions by the due date, and four points are awarded for posting at least four responses, comments, or questions to others by the due date.

NOTE: This week's discussion does not require outside reading, but subsequent discussions will.

Directions for posting to the discussion: Once the student accesses the Angel website and logs in, he or she should look for the "Discussions" tab near the top of the screen, click on it, and look for the appropriate week’s discussion. For this week (the first week), the student should look for the Discussion #3 link. Once that link is accessed, the student should see three questions posted by the instructor, and—if he or she is not the first to respond—replies from other students. The student should then click on each of the instructor’s links and reply to the questions by the end of Friday, January 8. Answers to discussion questions are worth up to a total of six (6) points, or two points per question.

The final step of the discussion process requires students to respond to their peers’ answers and comments using the Angel software. After logging into Angel, students are to read through others’ answers and post at least four comments or questions to others by the end of Monday, January 11. Responses to other students are worth up to a total of four (4) points, or one point per response.

Any late answers and responses will be subject to a 10% per day late penalty. Students are expected to answer all questions posed to them by others during the discussion, as doing so is necessary for effective interaction. Discussion answers and/or responses posted more than a week late will not be accepted.

Many wellness issues are publicized in the news while others go unnoticed. Some issues directly and indirectly affect millions of people, while other concerns affect fewer numbers. Similarly, some concerns may be short-term while others appear to have long-lasting implications. For this discussion, you will be identifying important wellness issues as well as sharing your opinion on less important topics.

Answer the following discussion questions at the conferencing site by the end of FRIDAY, January 8:

  1. What current health or wellness issue do you think is the most important in today's society? Why? (Note: while an issue related to physical wellness may be the easiest to identify, you may also find other, non-physical issues to be as or more important if you give some extra time and thought to this question)
  2. What current health or wellness issue do you think receives too much attention? Explain.
  3. Is it ethical to address a health issue by mandating behavior if that behavior benefits the health of one or more persons? (Examples: requiring students to meet specific educational standards, banning smoking in restaurants, etc.)

After posting your ideas to the conferencing site, post at least four (4) responses or questions to other students concerning their answers. These responses and/or questions must be posted by the end of MONDAY, January 11. Please answer all responses and questions posed to you. Doing so optimizes the discussion environment. Failing to answer questions is similar to remaining silent in a classroom when someone asks you a question, so please do your best in contributing to a successful discussion. Responses and questions to others should, of course, be posed in a respectable tone. Students are expected to answer all questions asked of them on the conferencing site.

Travel to the Angel software system, log in, click the "Discussion" tab, and look for "Discussion #1"
