Internet Search

You will be searching the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS), a very large health-related informational resource. The NCHS is part of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the U.S. Government's Department of Health and Human Services. The Center is the government's main statistical agency regarding health.

Once you access the NCHS website, perform the following steps before completing your report:

1) Click on "FASTATS A to Z"

2) Under the "D" heading, click on "Deaths/Mortality"

Visit the National Center for HealthStatistics

Report

Find and report back the following information to the instructor via Angel or e-mail :

  1. What is the number one cause of death in the United States?
  2. What is the second-ranked cause of death in the United States?
  3. What is the third-ranked cause of death in the United States?
  4. Think about the types of diseases typically seen in the United States 100 years ago. Then, comment on how the most prevalent diseases seen today (as indicated by the above website) are different than those seen in the early 1900s. Why are today's diseases so common? Answer this question in approximately one paragraph.**
  5. Were the results what you expected? Why or why not?

**If you do not know what kinds of diseases were prevalent at the turn of the twentieth century, you may wish to read a brief description of the history of the U.S. Public Health Service. Included with this description are the names of a few diseases seen during this time period.
