Discussion

New York City was the first city in the United States to ban trans fats in its restaurants. In 2008, California passed a law--in effect as of January 1, 2010--to become the first state to ban trans fats in restaurants. Although a controversial issue, the ban has mvoed forward, in order to promote cardiovascular health. For this discussion, students will read the following articles about dietary fat and trans fat bans, and if they have the appropriate software available, students are also to view the 1.5-minute MSNBC video regarding the New York City trans fat ban.

DISCUSSION

After reading the articles, post answers to the following discussion questions using the Angel courseware system (after logging in, click on the class link, then the Discussions tab, and look for Discussion #3) by the end of Friday, January 22:

  1. Trans fats have been banned in a variety of areas across the country, including New York City, Boston, King County, Montgomery County (Maryland), and Philadelphia. Do you think this trend will spread across the entire country? Why or why not?
  2. Do the benefits of banning trans fat in foods outweigh the drawbacks? Explain.
  3. Do you think the banning of trans fat in restaurants will spread to other regulations such as banning saturated fat, setting a calorie limits on foods, requiring nutritional supplementation in low-nutrient foods, etc?

Six points are awarded for answering all questions completely and by the due date.

After posting your discussion answers, post at least four (4) responses or questions to other students regarding their answers. These responses and/or questions must be posted by MONDAY, January 25. Responses and questions should, of course, be posed with a respectable tone. Students are expected to answer all questions posed to them. Responses posed to other students are worth four points total, provided they are posted by the due date.
