Intrauterine Device

Despite its lack of popularity in the United States, the intrauterine device, or IUD, is one of the most commonly used reversible contraceptives used in the world. The IUD is inserted into a woman's uterus to prevent conception. To view an illustration of an IUD within a female's reproductive system, travel to McGraw-Hill Human Sexuality Image Bank (R). Required reading about intrauterine devices is located at Planned Parenthood's website (R). The American Academy of Family Physicians also provides information on the IUD (O).

Sterilization

Sterilization, considered permanent contraception, is the most common method used in the United States. Planned Parenthood explains tubal sterilization (also known as tubal ligation) and vasectomy (R). There are SENSITIVE photos of a tubal ligation from D. Ashley Hill's Women's Health Site (O--you will need to scroll toward the bottom of the page).

Vasectomymedical.com shows a streaming video of a no-scalpel vasectomy (O--yes, it's real and very interesting, but not for the squeamish).

Natural Family Planning

Natural Family Planning methods do not involve hormones or devices. While they generally have a higher failure rate than other contraceptive methods, Natural Family Planning options are used by many for a variety of reasons. Planned Parenthood has information on these "Fertility Awareness-Based Methods"  (R--for the final exam, please be familiar with the temperature method, the cervical mucus method, the calendar method, standard days method, and symptothermal method).
